The Midnight Filament Run

There’s something about 2 AM that hits different when you have ADHD. The world is quiet, the notifications stop, and suddenly your brain decides now is the perfect time to design that perfect cable management bracket you’ve been thinking about for three weeks.

I don’t fight it anymore. I’ve learned that my hyperfocus is a feature, not a bug.

The Setup

My print station is right next to my desk. Everything within arm’s reach:

  • Printer: Pre-heated and ready (I keep PLA loaded because who has time to swap at 2 AM)
  • Calipers: Always within reach — never trust a dimension you haven’t measured
  • Laptop: OpenSCAD open, AI agent standing by
  • Snacks: Essential. You can’t design on an empty stomach

Why It Works

When hyperfocus kicks in, I can iterate through 4-5 design revisions in a single session. The feedback loop is tight:

  1. Idea strikes → sketch on paper (30 seconds)
  2. Describe to AI agent → code generated (2 minutes)
  3. Review render → request tweaks (1 minute)
  4. Export STL → slice → start print (5 minutes)
  5. While that prints → start the next design

By sunrise, I’ve got three new prototypes and zero regrets.

The Morning After

Sure, I might be a little tired. But you know what I also am? The owner of a perfectly fitting replacement knob for that vintage stereo I found at a thrift store. Try getting THAT kind of satisfaction from a full night’s sleep.

Pro tip: Set a filament runout alarm. Nothing kills a 2 AM vibe like waking up to a half-printed disaster.
